MacBook will not turn on? Try this first

A MacBook that will not turn on is alarming, but it does not always mean the worst. A surprising number come back to life with a few simple steps, and even when they do need a repair, it is often something straightforward. Work through these checks first before assuming the worst.

First, rule out the simple stuff

• Check the charger and cable. Try a different Apple charger and cable if you can. Frayed cables and dead chargers are one of the most common causes. Look for a light on the MagSafe connector if your model has one.
• Try a different socket. Rule out the wall socket or extension lead.
• Let it charge for a while. If the battery is completely flat, it may need 10 to 15 minutes on charge before it will respond at all. Leave it plugged in and be patient.
• Listen and feel. Any fan noise, a startup chime, or warmth tells you it is getting some power, useful information for a technician.

Force a proper restart

If it still seems dead, hold the power button (the Touch ID button on most modern MacBooks) down firmly for about 10 seconds, then release and press it again. This forces a hard restart and clears a surprising number of no-power states where the Mac is actually on but the screen is black.

Reset the power controller

On older Intel MacBooks, resetting the SMC (the chip that manages power) fixes many charging and power faults. The exact key combination depends on the model. On newer Apple Silicon MacBooks there is no SMC to reset, a simple shut down and restart does the same job. If you are not sure which you have, this is a good point to ask us rather than guess.

When it needs a technician

If none of the above wakes it up, the likely culprits are a failed charging board, a worn-out battery, liquid damage, or a fault on the logic board. These are common and very often repairable, frequently for far less than a new MacBook. Signs it is time to bring it in include: no response at all on a known-good charger, a burning or liquid smell, visible damage, or a Mac that powers on but shows nothing on screen.
